I don't think that the two of you are agreeing (but I could have misunderstood either or both of your points). To clarify-I don't think it's possible to create a post season calibur lineup by 2010 by picking up castoffs and developing what is currently in the Giants system. I think we need to add a probably 3 well established productive players via FA or trade to the recipe to get there. From the current crop of Lewis, Rajai, Shierholtz, Frandsen, Ortmeier, we get 1 maybe 2 regulars who stick, we'd be in great shape to get a third. So you still need to add 5 players to that mix. Maybe we keep Benjie or Winn for another year, we've got Rowand. That still leaves two players to add. I'm just saying you can't rebuild in one offseason, or even two when you've got fringe youngsters in the bigs and nothing between there and Low A.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Freshbreaker)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 12:06:07 +0000 Re: Win now with Konerko at 1bhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450813,from=rss#post450813https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450813,from=rss#post450813quote:Konerko would be going from a great hitters park to one of the toughest also. That said, no way the ChiSox give him up for what we've got to offer. Winn for Konerko reminds me of a quote from High Fidelity: "Sometimes I got so bored of trying to touch her breast that I would try to touch her between her legs. It was like trying to borrow a dollar, getting turned down, and asking for 50 grand instead." nondisclosed_email@example.com (Every6thDay)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 11:31:32 +0000 Win now with Konerko at 1bhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450808,from=rss#post450808https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450808,from=rss#post450808Agreed, Fresh. With scavenging what is possible now and next year combined with some excellent luck from the farm, the lineup could be a lot better in 2 years. I'm cool with that as long as it coincides with serious pond-stocking of good young talent that will pay off in 3-5 years. Add all that up and you have decent baseball with a shot at winning some games just about every season. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Lionel Mandrake)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 11:27:54 +0000 Re: Win now with Konerko at 1bhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450806,from=rss#post450806https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450806,from=rss#post450806He hit .259 last year with an 841 OPS. He's not going to carry a lineup IMO. He had a great year in 06. And you're right it would take more than Sanchez and Winn/Roberts. And as for this "win now" it just isn't possible, but I'd like to win in 2009, or 2010, and the Giants wont be able to do that through FA and internal promotion alone. And they aren't going to be able to add all the pieces at once, so everyone who is complaining about adding a piece or two this offseason needs to realize that no one can add 3-4 pieces in one offseason. If they don't start adding a piece or two now, the rebuild will only take longer. Anyone who thinks we can have a competetive team that is only a FA or two away, by internal promotion and picking up non-tenders before 2011 (when Cain and Lowry will/could be gone) is dreaming. While Rowand is not going to carry a lineup or even close to it, we need a certain number of decent players, and there's a good chance that we only get one or two decent everyday guys from the group we now have. By adding one now, Sabean is a step closer. It sucks he's an OF, and not an anchor type bat but I appreciate Sabean's intentions to speed up the process, even if it costs a few bucks extra. All that said, they better up the payroll a bit.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Freshbreaker)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 11:19:23 +0000 Win now with Konerko at 1bhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450801,from=rss#post450801https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450801,from=rss#post450801White Sox have Josh Fields at 3rd, with a trade of Konerko, Crede or Fields would play 1B. nondisclosed_email@example.com (TheMalcontent)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 10:27:06 +0000 Re: Win now with Konerko at 1bhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450800,from=rss#post450800https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450800,from=rss#post450800quote:22TheThrill wrote: Winn and Sanchez for Konerko? I'd rather see them use 2008 to try to find a few guys that can be really cheap major leaguers, even some are only "moderately good" or "bench players". In this situation, I think it would be good to take a flyer on a cheap youngster like Ortmeier or Brad Eldred or Dallas McPherson.nondisclosed_email@example.com (MarcoPolo666)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 09:48:54 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450795,from=rss#post450795https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450795,from=rss#post450795Yes, I've used that before, I was just too lazy to look it up. It looks like maybe they could use a guy like Roberts who only has two years left and has a reasonable contract (okay not reasonable for a mid 30's 4th OF) or Winn at a slightly steeper price, could help transition the outfield to the two youngsters, Quentin and Owens. I doubt Chicago wants to give both those guys 500 AB, while Quentin has upside he was horrible last year. True they would be taking some chances if they had to move Thome to 1B. That said it seems like Winn/Roberts, Sanchez, Hennesey might be enough. I'd prefer to keep Hennessey, but Sanchez and Winn might not be enough.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Freshbreaker)Fri, 14 Dec 2007 09:37:18 +0000 Re: …https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450793,from=rss#post450793https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p450793,from=rss#post450793ESPN had a "depth chart" link on each team's "home" page.
