Re: 2008 non-tendered list

I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants take a chance and make a run at Dallas McPherson and Mark Prior. McPherson has a lot of power, but has had back issues and I believe he does struggle a bit with contact. Giants don't really have a 3B, so it might be a possible low cost/high reward gamble. Also, Prior has great stuff he just has problems staying healthy. Since we will not be good next year it might be a good idea to give him a chance. Maybe have him start in the pen and if things go well possibly move him into the rotation. If he does well hopefully he returns the favor and signs long term, if he doesn't pan out the Giants lose a couple million. Another possibly relatively low cost/high reward situation.

Dude. Prior? Signs long term?

Noooooo

He can't stay healthy. At all. Put it this way; if the pitching-starved CUBS non-tendered him, why the hell would the pitching-overstuffed Giants want him? Prior is toast. He'd be decent for a contender to take a chance on, but not a rebuilding team. Just imo.

The cubs non-tendered him because :

1- The Cubs couldn't pay him less than 80% of last year's salary. The cubs paid him $3.575M in '07.
2- He will be a FA after the 2008 season. He didn't want to add any (reasonably priced) option years to a 2008 contract. Why should the Cubs take a gamble to pay him a boatload of money to rehabilitate himself, and then let him walk? (Hint: they shouldn't.)

Any team can now offer Prior a cheap, multi-year contract full of incentive payouts (say 3 years at $500K each, with $1M for 12 starts, $2M for both 18 and 23 starts, $3M for 28 or more starts).

Re: 2008 non-tendered list

All I am saying is that his stuff is much better than most of the pitchers the Giants have. I am talking about a one year deal, this is of course if he signs for a reasonable contract. If he doesn't have any problems then try and sign him for a 2-3 year deal. I said long term, but didn't mean 5+ years. I think he knows he will never get an actual long term contract for big bucks with the issues he has had. Or maybe the cheap multi-year deal loaded with incentives would be a good way to go.

Maybe keeping him in the pen will put less strain on his arm. It isn't something we have to do, I just think it might be good to consider. Besides our pen wasn't very good las year. People like to blame the hitting, but the pen was pretty bad as well.

Seems like a low risk high reward proposition.

Prior need not be anything more than a 5th starter, even if he fails Correia or Sanchez could capably man that role. If he should rediscover his 03 form, imagine flipping him for some nice prospects ala what the Rangers did with Eric Gagne.

There are a number of names that I think would be great to pick up for cheap - say, a minor league contract (with an option for a second year in the minors if they already have 6 years in the minors)

For example :

Dallas McPherson has his own thread, so I'll just mention him.

Brad Eldred did pretty darn well in the minors (when not injured).

Jose Garcia would be a great pickup for either AA or AAA.

Mark Prior would be a great pickup ONLY if *really* cheap with an option for a 2nd year (which I think would mean signing him in late Jan or Feb if nobody else picks him up).
