My favorite part is the following excerpt:

"The timing of Conte's contact with the DEA also suggests the team could have inadvertently had a hand in helping set off the BALCO probe. In August 2002, according to court records, Jeff Novitzky of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigations unit began investigating the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs to elite athletes by BALCO.

Novitzky wrote in an affidavit that the probe was launched based on "the development of information." He cited two identical tips stating that Anderson was providing drugs to major leaguers. One of those tips came from a local DEA agent."

So not only did Sabean handle this irresponsibly, he may have set off the whole BALCO investigation.

!@#$.

Classic.

Priceless

With this Mitchell Report, there is a faint glimmer of hope that maybe the Giants from top to bottom could suffer trying to save face and get back on track. That and watching Aaron Rowan blow goats next year should start the regime's decline.

Three straight losing seasons and a barren farm system aren't enough for people? Dammit!

I know, I know, the stadium still sells out. I doubt poor management will keep people from coming either, though. The world is replete with p1ss-poor management and most people are so used to it that they are no longer offended by it.

Sabean's actions noted in the Mitchell report.

We can rag on sabes all we want, but he is far from the only GM that turned a blind eye.

This was the NORM.

I mean come on, when have you ever heard of a GM outing someone for juice in the past 15 years??? Or banning a trainer from the clubhouse for distributing roids??

The only reason Sabes is all over the report is because Mitchell simply regurgitated GAME OF SHADOWS. That's where all the Giants' information comes from. Lance & Mark were trying to bust Barry Bonds of LOS GIGANTES. They could care less about other GMs.

I guarentee if other reporters did exposes on other teams' GMs, there would be plenty blame to spread around. Sabean is just the lucky one that got targeted.

To me that is no excuse. People do bad things all the time and some people get caught and others do not. It is not a defense to say that it's okay simply because others are doing it to.

Sabean got caught and as Ray Ratto stated in today's Chron that he turned the other eye and lost organizational control. For those reasons, I believe that the commissioner has the moral high ground to levy some heavy fines against the Giants. While the commissioner might have a difficult time fining any current players because of the collective bargaining agreement with the players union, but Selig can and should in my opinion send a major signal to baseball by disciplining an entire organization, most notably the Giants, for not dealing with the issue and loosing control over their team.

I also would like to think that Brian Sabean and Peter Magowan should give Stan Conte a public apology for not taking action when Stan was trying to prompt them to take appropriate action. That would be the right thing to do IMO instead of just publishing a canned statement or saying that they are out of the country. The Giants are lucky that Stan Conte didn't sue the crap out of them.

I'm a HUGE Giants fan but I'm saddened by the lack of integrity and poor decision making by the GM and owner in this issue.

Just sayin'

This is about more than just outing steroids users.

This is about Sabean's unwillingness to take control of his team.

This is about Sabean trying to send a peon to do his job.

This about the man who was in charge of the clubhouse and team lying straight faced to the owner when confronted.

I can almost justify turning a blind eye, but I can not justify how a GM can operate with such a disrespect and fear of his own employees. It was his actions as a boss and manager that are in question. The steroids are only secondary in my eyes.
