I'd give him a major league deal, but just with a year and options.

McPherson has only 2 years of service time (IIRC, he was non-tendered as a super-2 player).

Even if the Giants only signed him to a 1-year deal, he'd still have 3 years of arbitration to go through before becoming a free agent, correct?

Incorrect. He is now a free agent. Only if he signs a "minor league deal" do the rules of free agency and arbitration apply to him.

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

i say minor league deal with a spring training invite. He makes the league min unless he starts the season off in SF and then his salary goes up to 1 mil. If he doesn't make the club out of spring training he can to be release and sign with another team.

Did that change in the last CBA?

Pierzynski still had 2 years of arbitration remaining when he signed a 1-year deal with the White Sox in 2005. In 2006, he signed an extension to avoid arbitration.

Also, draftees have signed major league contracts without having any effect on the 6-year rule (Prior and Teixeira, IIRC). There's also Japanese imports, who often stipulate mandatory non-tenders into their deals so that they can get around the 6-year rule.

*EVERY* free agent is arbitration eligible. The Giants offered arbitration to Feliz. Just because he was eligible for arbitration doesn't mean that he was "captive". If I remember correctly, AJ signed that contract *before* the arbitration deadline that year.

Hey, I could be wrong. But anybody who is non-tendered automatically becomes a free agent - if they sign with a team, they automatically become captive again?

article states specifically that Pierzynski signed a 1-year deal with the White Sox for the 2005 seasons, but would not become a free agent until after 2006. While every free agent is eligible for arbitration, it would be odd to say that a free agent signed an extension to avoid arbitration.

In other words, yes, non-tendered players become captive again if they sign a contract that doesn't run through their remaining arbitration years. Teams can put in mandatory non-tender clauses, but I think that's only a courtesy for Japanese league veterans. I would think that management would take a much harder line with guys like McPherson, for fear of setting a precedent.

Bhaakon is correct regarding this.

I only mention the options because Boras appears to want a multi-year deal, but might be willing to settle for letting his young player just earn it.
