Dallas McPherson???

The Giants have spoken to agent Scott Boras about infielder Dallas McPherson, who became a free agent when the Los Angeles Angels did not tender him a contract. McPherson is coming off back surgery but he is a former top prospect with home run potential and could play first or third base

Wuh?!? We'll see what [sign in to see URL] be a nice comeback story. I'm sure they will evaluate his medical records.

Please provide credit for quotes you post (especially the copyrighted stuff). The *board* can get slammed or unattributed quotes.

I read the above quote :
"The Giants have spoken to agent Scott Boras about infielder Dallas McPherson, who became a free agent when the Los Angeles Angels did not tender him a contract. McPherson is coming off back surgery but he is a former top prospect with home run potential and could play first or third base "

at the very, very end of this SJMercury news article ([url=[sign in to see URL] ).

Do not suggest trading for somebody for only two years (unless the Giants dump a crappy contract)

I think that the key words are "agent Scott Boras". They aren't going to get McPherson "cheap" (or signed to a minor league contract) unless it happens in 2008. They may or may not be able to get incentives as a major part of compensation.

I only wanted McPherson if he was cheap, since he's a gamble. I also only wanted him signed to a minor league contract, which establishes the Giants "rights" to a guy w/ less than 6 years major league service.

sigh. Let's hope Sabes doesn't get bent over the barrel by Boras over this.

A minor league contract would be laughed at , whether Boras was his agent or not.

McPherson has injury concerns. It's not unheard of.

I don't want to see McPherson on the Giants if he will have a base salary over $1M. It's fine to have escalators that will ratchet it up (the big money being around 400 or 450 PAs).

If he wants more, let him pass. If you can't find another 3B, sign whatever scrap crap is around in Feb, or just let Aurilia and Frandsen play 3B.

I'd be willing to spend as much on McPherson as I would on a high-level international amateur FA; I don't think the odds of McPherson becoming a good player are that much different from Villalona's. There's the difference in service time, of course, but that's somewhat offset by the fact that McPherson is here right now as opposed to 3+ seasons away.

I'd give him a major league deal, but just with a year and options.

Definitely, we should explore the option. Kick the tires, do due diligence, and so forth.

FWIW, the Giants did resign Leone to a minor league deal. I wouldn't be surprised if he's given a shot at the major league spot.

I'd rather give the job to Leone (even if he ends up sucking) than sign Feliz for 2 years. The Giants have Aurilia and Frandsen who can take over if he blows, and they can always send him back to Fresno or dump him for little cost. Risk is low, reward is medium or high. If he turns out to just be a Brandon Inge-type player (say, .700 OPS) and can play 3B and 1B, then he is a cheap IF utility player, and you don't have to sign (say) an Aurilia or a Neifi for $3-$4M. If he's an IF with an OPS of .750 or better, that's a win. Take the risk. We know what we get with Feliz, and he's not a good match for the 08 Giants.
