Andy Pettitte (Yankees), Michael Barrett (Padres) and Mark Loretta (Astros) accept arbitration
By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
Friday, December 7, 2007
Andy Pettitte formally returned to the New York Yankees on Friday night when he accepted the team's offer of salary arbitration.
Catcher Michael Barrett returned to the San Diego Padres when he accepted his club's offer and infielder Mark Loretta went back to the Houston Astros. They were the only players to accept among the 17 offered arbitration by their former clubs last Saturday.
Pettitte, who made $16 million last season, decided last weekend he preferred to pitch for the Yankees next year and put off retirement. The acceptance of arbitration appeared to be procedural — he had a standing $16 million offer from New York.
Pettitte was 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA this year in his return to the Yankees following three seasons with his hometown Houston Astros. The left-hander went 11-3 after the All-Star break.
He declined a $16 million player option last month, saying he needed more time for a decision.
Loretta hit .287 with four homers and 41 RBIs last season, when he made $3.5 million, including $1 million in performance bonuses.
Barrett, who earned $4.4 million, batted .244 for the Chicago Cubs and the Padres, who acquired him in a June trade.
Among those who declined arbitration offers and remained free agents are outfielder Mike Cameron (San Diego), third baseman Pedro Feliz (San Francisco), reliever Eric Gagne (Boston), pitcher Livan Hernandez (Arizona), left-hander Ron Mahay (Atlanta), left-hander Trever Miller, catcher Mike Piazza (Oakland), outfielder Aaron Rowand (Philadelphia), outfielder Shannon Stewart (Athletics) and reliever Luis Vizcaino (Yankees).

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sabean sign Morgan Ensberg if he is DFA by San Diego. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants sign Mike Cameron although he has to serve a 25 game suspension and they have a twig-jam in the outfield.
I'm glad Feliz is moving on. I'll miss his glove but not his brain dead hitting.
Just sayin'

I spoke with Ensberg's dad the other day and he mentioned that he will be free to sign with another team...he mentioned he's going to sell his house in TX after the first of the year and wants to remain on the West Coast close to his new house in SoCal.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants taking a chance on Ensberg but not for more than a year with a team option.

I was for signing him last year when he was DFA and sent to SD. I agree...one year deal w/ a team option...wouldn't block Villalona as he is still at least two years away.
Though if it doesn't happen...I am fine with Frannie at the hot corner...keep him in one position so he can focus on hitting and see what he is capable of.

I'd like the Giants to add another bat to the infield that has more pop. I'd like to see the Giants take a chance on Ensberg, especially now with Carney on board as the hitting instructor. But if they sign Ensberg, I'd like the Giants to DFA Aurilia so as to allow more playing time for Fransden.
