Hey Cam, point of order----what did you pay for "In Rainbows"... I figured I'd split the difference and gave them ten bucks.
I am an old school, anal retentive sonofabitch and I waited until the album came out on a solid, physical medium before I bought it (and I paid full price).
I know that I missed out hearing the album for a few months, but in the end, it was worth it for me. I refused to "borrow" the music from a friend and listen until the CD came out on general principle because I am hoping and praying that what radiohead (and NIN*) have done recently will start a trend and kill the big labels, or at least injure them to the point that they are no longer significant enough to dump crappy bands like New Found Glory or Good Charlotte onto the world.
Also, I am just not ready to abandon the idea of compact discs just yet and I won't until the sound quality of the digital track is equal to what I can hear on a compact disc playing on my home stereo.
Much in the same way, I refused to buy a digital camera until it hit 7 megapixels in a point-and-shoot format. As a purveyor of all things quality in art, I refuse to accept sub-standard quality for the sake of convenience.
The only purchase I ever made on iTunes was an out-of-print Ella Fitzgerald Christmas CD that I really wanted to hear, so I bought it and immediately ripped a copy onto a CD-R. I know I accepted a lesser quality sound, but it was a Christmas album and I bought it for my wife, so I relented.
All I know is that when my hard drive fails (and all hard drives WILL fail at some point) I have a physical copy of each and every song I have ever listened to. I have to spend time re-ripping the tracks, but that's a lot cheaper than actually buying all my music over again.
Oh, and to show you just how anal retentive I am, I also have two backups AND a DVD-R collection of all the MP3s I have ripped.
*Reznor's release of Ghosts I-V was totally amazing and I love what he has done. The reason I was able to hear those is because I actually reviewed the songs for a music website and the site bought them for me.

Re: …
I was a stereo geek and resisted teh digital revolution until recently. But the quality has improved steadily. The MP3 downloads from Amazon are even higher bit rate and sound just fine one real solid-state stereo system. Plus, I'm poor. I can get a full album from Amazon or iTunes for less than $10 while it would cost $16-18 at a record shop.
I've got all my digital music backed up onto MP3 DVD-Rs as well. The best thing about going digital is that your MP3s will never get scratched. No matter how much care you take, those in-dash CD players and wobbly boom boxes take their toll.
OT: Cam, funny thing happened in my gmail account today. Google has a thing where it scans emails and place ads on the right side that are reflective of the content. You're talking to someone about guitars, you see Gibson and Fender ads. Taking a trip and you get discount airlines ads. etc, ect.
So I get an email from a Cameron Frye: Ads on teh right are for Chicago Cubs tickets and Ferrari. Seriously hilarious.

Re: …
I've never listened to his solo stuff. Did he do it as a side project to the Peppers or was it during his separation from the band?
Is it anything like the style he played in RHCP?

Re: …
About 90% of it was done as a side project. Only the album 'Smile from the Streets You Hold' was done during his departure from the Peppers. And that album isn't anything pretty, it was only produced for drug money and I doubt he got much drug money. The best stuff was done around the 'By the Way' period. He released "Shadows Collide with People" and 6 others around that time.
"Shadows Collide with People" is probably the best one to start with it. I would explain how it sounds but just listen for your self... This is 'Carvel' (via Youtube). It's the first track off "Shadows". It has a one minute synth intro before the traditional intruments get going. But this is pretty much what the album sounds like. Acoustic guitars, Non-sensical lyrics, some electric and some synths. Chad Smith plays drums, a Josh Klinghoffer loan his talents to most of the album and Flea also plays Upright (bass) on a song.

Re: Teh Music Thread
Anyone interested in seeing Dave Matthews Band at the Greek? Wife is a fanclub member and may parting with her tix.
New Gnarls Barkley came out. Just downloaded it from Amazon. It's interesting. Not as many upbeat songs, but a little more whimsical. So Beatles influence on some songs. I've listened to it a couple times, so I can't for sure say if it's better or worse than St. Elsewhere. For now, I'll just go with "different."
