Popped Double Fantasy into the CD player this morning for the commute. It is hard to believe he has been gone for twenty-seven years now. Here is a little something from the Huffington Post that first appeared in the Times:

I'd would have rather have had anyone but Howard Cosell tell me about that event. 27 years? I'm old.

OK, all you music stealing criminals out there, the RIAA is now ready to come after you for get this, burning CD’s YOU bought to YOUR computer:

[url][sign in to see URL]

Now, in an unusual case in which an Arizona recipient of an RIAA letter has fought back in court rather than write a check to avoid hefty legal fees, the industry is taking its argument against music sharing one step further: In legal documents in its federal case against Jeffrey Howell, a Scottsdale, Ariz., man who kept a collection of about 2,000 music recordings on his personal computer, the industry maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer.

The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.

These !@#$ assholes have to be the most clueless bunch of knobs around. Instead of embracing the technology that is coming and adapting to it and finding new ways to make money, they desperately cling to the past and take the asinine approach of suing their clients for copying media they purchased to their own PC or Ipod? Well shitdicks, if you are going to go for this, you might as well start at the top and sue POTUS, who is obviously stealing music by ripping Beatles CD’s to his computer and Ipod:

Sorry, for the rant, but these people are digging their own grave and are they too stupid to realize it, as they piss off their customers.

Returning to the intended theme, I did receive some new music (for me) in the form of the latest CD by Muse:

Black Holes and Revelations. I’ve only had the chance to spin it once, but it is an eclectic mix of styles, and they appear to be up and coming from the UK.

And Kal, thanks for the recs. I picked up Barrington Levy In Dub. Great stuff, and I will be sampling some more when I get a chance to cash in some of my I Tune gift cards.

Heh.

gawd, those RCIA !@#$ piss me off. You're dead on, Bong. They should be embracing the technology. I've been saying that for 10 years!

I can't wait to see the evolution of the independent musician as they make their millions without a dime hitting those industry assholes. All it will take is some non-profit company to setup and run a worldwide database/website so anyone can access any artist not signed to a label. Imagine when the number one video on TRL is only available online. Or when more huge bands do like Radiohead did with In Rainbows.

I like the new Pumpkins album. It not their best, but it's a good album.

I bought the latest from the John Butler Trio. Not so good, IMO. A little too KFOG-ish for me. But they admit to producing a more radio friendly album. I guess there's nothing wrong with getting big check finally. But they still kicked ass in concert.

Ok, time to try and kick some life back into this thread with a little Lightnin’ Strike:

[url][sign in to see URL]

As a friend of mine recently kicked down a best of disc a few weeks ago, which has been running through the rotation:

[url][sign in to see URL]

With one of my favorite albums of all time:

Also slipped into some Talking Heads,

Broke out a bit of the other Elvis,

Mixing in one of my favorite Lou covers:

Followed by the man himself:

On the new music side, liking the latest from Muse the more I listen to Black Holes:

So what has been on your dials, ipod’s and entertainment systems lately?

Anything new?

OMG, I've been like so totally indy lately.

the stuff I've been listening to lately have been a little on the indy pop side. I've been hitting the gym pretty regularly, so I like to keep an upbeat mix on the Nano.

First off, I've quit buying the music from iTunes and have been going exclusively through [sign in to see URL]. Their collection isn't as good yet, but the price is much less than iTunes, it's a higher quality MP3 and they aren't DRM protected, so you can burn your own copies onto CD if you want. The downloader actually downloads directly into your iTunes folder-no confusion or platform wars or complications. Highly recommend it, fellas.

First off, I picked up the album from Weekend . It's actually a pretty good, complete album. and only $[sign in to see URL] on The 'Zon. Quality gym and driving music.

I also bought the new one from
[url=[sign in to see URL] . Again, solid pop album

I just saw "Into the Wild" the other day and promptly picked up the soundtrack. It's all Eddie Vedder. I was hoping that some of Kaki King's fanastic strumming would make it, since she did the score for the movie. But no luck.

And lastly, Mrs. Chef downloaded albums from
and [url=[sign in to see URL] National. It's kinda emo-ish I guess. I prefer the term melodic myself, but the kids seem to think "emo" means something. whatevah! it's a good album

New Gnarls Barkley due to hit stores soon. They've been playing the !@#$ out of the new single (Run?) lately and I kinda like it.

I liked the VW A-Punk, and it reminded me a lot of Dave Wakeling and the English Beat.

As for the Spoon, if you like the latest and don’t have Gimmie Fiction, give it a try. Another solid effort, and I also recommend catching them live if you get a chance. I caught them at the Fillmore after they put out Gimmie Fiction, and it was a solid show.

I went old school this week as I was going through some old CD’s and I threw Coleman Hawkins April In Paris into the rotation. Body and Soul is about as good as it gets:

[url][sign in to see URL]

Also found a pretty good live version from his later years on the tube:

[url][sign in to see URL]

Also popped Luciano’s latest into the rotation recently for reasons that will become obvious in the next post:

Also still can’t kick the 80’s, spinning a little Best of WOM from the Pixies

Speaking of Dave Wakeling, he's playing in SF on March 22. One of my best friends/cohorts is playing keyboards for him on this tour, you should check them out.

The English Beat

My friend told me that they just recorded some TV spot yesterday while they were in NYC. It is supposed to air sometime next month. I'll keep you updated if you're interested.
