Re: The 2008 draft - Who Fits?
I'm praying that Pedro Alvarez goes "Porcello" and slips to us simply because his demands are too high. But I agree, the Rays don't exactly have a history of letting top talent slip based on salary demands (see: Matt White, although that didn't exactly work out well for them).
Also, although he's young and it's way too early to tell, I've heard him compared to Pujols, and that he would have been the top bat in LAST YEARS draft. Brute, any truth to that? Any idea what his Major League ETA might be as well?

The 2008 draft - Who Fits?
If signed early Alvarez will be in the majors this September. He's that good.

I haven't heard the Pujols comparison, but as for whether he'd have been the best bat in last year's draft, it's a matter of opinion, but I wouldn't argue. He's got about the same ceiling as last year's top bat, Matt Wieters, but is a much better defensive player. Granted, that isn't 'bat', but he's absolutely a better player prospect.

The Pujols comparison was from Bryan Smith of Baseball Prospectus. After the '07 draft he wrote of Alvarez:
"If Alvarez was included in this season’s draft class, David Price be damned, the Devil Rays would have chosen Alvarez. The Red Sox considered signing Alvarez out of high school but the third baseman wanted to go to Vanderbilt, and he has blossomed under Tim Corbin. Alvarez is built like Albert Pujols and profiles to have similarly elite power. Scott Boras throws around the term a lot, but I don’t, Alvarez is a generational amateur talent."
Albeit, it's just one man's opinion, that's quite an endorsement.

I'd be happy with a couple more Cain's or Timmey's. Sure the organization needs some position players but I just want the Giants to draft the best players available. Please no more Tony Torcato's or Todd Linden's.
Just sayin'
An example of my thinking is that if Alderson has a meteoric rise through the system and gets a September call up, (not what I think will happen) then I would be more than happy to trade him or a current starter for a position player.
Because pitchers generally move faster and even more so in the Giants system, it might more efficient, if they got the right pitcher,to draft the best pitcher and filp him for a bat in a year or two instead of waiting around for a hitter to develop. Don't hold your breath.

I think that this has been Sabean's plan all along however, he's finding out that teams are more than likely wanting to hold onto their top young hitters, even when they are in desperate need of pitching, e.g., the Reds or the M's. So in order for this strategy to work, Sabean needs to get equal or better value for his young pitchers, something so far he has been unable to get. This also means that Sabean has to maximize the most out of all the position players that he drafts. The organization needs a ton more Noonan's.
I do think that either Bumgardner or Alderson will make it to the big club after this year which should make Lowry, Sanchez, etc even more expendable. Again, however, can Sabean get anybody of value for some young arms?
Just sayin'

The 2008 draft - Who Fits?
I like Alonso from the U of Miami, the dude can flat out smash the ball, not in great conditioning, but I don't think it really matters.

The 2008 draft - Who Fits?
I know that organizations should not draft out of need but rather by talent available, and not to beat a dead horse, but the Giants really need a corner infielder, a corner outfielder with pop, and a catching prospect. I'd be happy if the Giants just use their #5 pick for a decent bat.
