i [sign in to see URL] was checking out standings and went wtf? how the hell did the pirates win 3??????

Hamels started toward the dugout after what he thought was a strike. Lincecum didn't get the call & buzzed ump Dana DeMuth w. a fastball that slammed off the backstop & then froze Hamels w. another 3rd strike. 4/28/10 Timmy the ump killer.

Santana wasn't even CLOSE to being in this situation. He was a Rule 5 draftee that HAD to be on the roster, or else he would've been lost. He was placed in the bullpen to be hidden as much as possible, and predictably, he got shelled to the tune of a [sign in to see URL] ERA.

Billingsley was a major league starter last year. I don't know why the Dodgers are changing him this year, but it's not for a need in the bullpen.

Wainwright might be a comparison, but then look at the so-called posterboy for this technique: Jonathan Papelbon. Sure, they kept saying he was going to be a starter again right up until two weeks [sign in to see URL] then they put him back at closer, with rumors about questions of his ability to hold up to a full year of starting. WHOOPS. We'll see if Wainwright (or Billingsley) hold up...

Bottom line for me: DON'T !@#$ WITH THE TOP 10 PROSPECT (and when I say Top 10, I mean in all of baseball). Just don't. Don't risk it. Don't fool with it. Don't push it. He won't solve this team's problems, why risk it for this team?

You raise some valid points Brute. That being said, if he pitches well in Fresno, I wouldn't mind seeing him come up late in the season around August or so and pitch out of the pen if, (and I realize that's a big if) this team is in contention and needs another arm to come up and fortify the pen.

Re: Sabean

I realize he was a Rule 5 draftee at one time and needed to remain on the roster or they would have had to give him back. But, I seem to recall about 5 years ago right before he burst onto the scene and became the dominate starter he is today, he made 13 relief appearances before becoming a full time starter. He posted a [sign in to see URL] ERA that year. Pitching in the pen didn't seem to hurt Santana's development. I know every case is different, but I don't necessarily buy the argument that having Lincecum pitch in the pen at the big league level (permitted it's later in the season after some more experience at the minor league level) would hurt his development. That's just my opinion. I can also see your side of the argument as well though.

There are other players better suited to fortify the 'pen, too.

Take a look at who did well in relief for Fresno:
Pat Misch: 2.0 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 [sign in to see URL] strikeouts!

I'd like to see Misch stay a starter, he may give the Giants a reason to trade Lowry, but he's not someone I'd be so vehemently against being converted into a reliever.

(Atchison didn't suck [sign in to see URL] still like him)

One more thing about Santana and the whole conversion thing: the most successful starters-turned-relievers-then-gone-back-to-starting have taken years to become starters again: In Santana's case three and a half years before he finally became a starter. That's a lot of his cheap years gone, more than half, which is the big reason a team should develop their own players; if you have to sign him for big money after that to keep him, it's no better than just going through free agency.

I love what I've seen out of Misch...
No won't ever be a star, but he could be a valuable piece in the pen for many [sign in to see URL] [sign in to see URL] throw strikes.....
And yes, he could even become a part of the rotation and have some sucess

I agree. Lincecum's value as a starter in the future is much greater than his value as a releiver now.
The kid has a whopping 31 innings of minor league experience. Why start teh jimmy-jack so early? Denying him the chance to get experience as a starter could be quite damaging.

I think Sanchez will settle in and I am not even ready to write off JT. There's always guys like Munter who can get the call as well.

I was actually hoping Misch would go north with the big club. I don't really see the need for three relivers in the pen. Sanchez and Kline is enough. Taschner just plain sucks. Other than a few years ago when he first came up, he hasn't done !@#$ except get raked over the coals by opposing hitters.
