Where are they now (minor league edition)?

I found a seemingly definitive roster for Connecticut, and with it I'm now scratching my head about what happened to some guys:

Joe Dyche (banished to extended spring training after his horrible year in '06?)
Eugenio Velez (thought he was the new hot prospect, is he injured?)
Tim Hutting (had a decent year, thought he'd earn a promotion but don't see him anywhere)
Gib Hobson (thought he was good enough at S-K to earn a promotion but apparently not?)
Jason Waddell, Joe Bateman (thought they'd be at Fresno this year, but nowhere to be seen?)
Nathan Pendley, Sergio Romo, Buck Cody (thought they'd at least be in bullpens in San Jose or Augusta)

But more [sign in to see URL] what thought process does the team decide to move guys up thru the ranks, and then suddenly run into a roadblock at Fresno, where older, permanent minor leaguers block their paths? Ok, this year I can understand the infield situation, no one is really ready to move beyond the Defenders. But it seems to me we've got a number of pitchers who could be at Fresno, advancing their craft, and instead we've got Kinney, Atchison, Giese, etc. Because the Giants want 'veterans' who could step in and help out if need be? Good Lord, if Atchison or Kinney get called up, we're screwed anyway, so how could it be worse if we had a younger guy instead, who may lack experience but might actually have a degree of talent?

I'm about as loyal a fan as there is, but I honestly don't understand some aspects of how the Giants run their [sign in to see URL] guys with little or no experience suddenly get assigned to San Jose, guys get bounced between the bullpen and the rotation (Erick Threets, a starter, with his injury history???), etc. Maybe in spring training or extended spring training they see stuff we don't, but on the face of it, some of their decision making seems (intended or not) destined to set guys up to fail.

Re: Where are they now (minor league edition)?

Let me do what I can to answer these questions:

Dyche: Suffered an injury of some sort in ST, will probably return to SJ when healed. (He had injury issues last year, too)

Velez: Still having problems with the hand injury suffered in his ST collision with Schierholtz

Bateman: Also an injury, don't know what kind.

Pendley: Not sure, but he was on the DL to finish last year and may still be recovering.

Cody: Released in the offseason.

Romo: An off-field issue has kept him in extended ST.

Hutting, Waddell, Hobson: I have no info about

What pitchers do you think should be at Triple-A? In the Connecticut staff, I see exactly three who could be argued have earned those promotions: Pereira (who pitched there last year but was knocked around); Begg (Who, at this point, is little better than a Kinney or Atchison); and Geno Espineli (who looks like a solid bullpen guy). The rest of the staff either pitched poorly in AA last year (Broshuis, Petersen) or last pitched in Single-A (Sack, Cox, Anderson, Hedrick, Matos, McNiven Hinshaw, Sadowski).

Sorry, I simply don't see a real blockage of pitchers going on. It would look more like it if Bateman were assigned to Double-A, but with his health issue, Bateman might need to be there anyway now.

Re: Where are they now (minor league edition)?

So you see no issues in how the Giants have run their system over the last few years? Odd.

I see Pereira jumping too far, too quickly. The same with Dyche. Possibly the same with Burriss. Lincecum's drafted last summer, and in less than a year he's at Fresno. Is he being rushed, we'll see. One moment Timpner's in San Jose, the next Fresno. Ortmeier seems to be on a yo-yo between Connecticut and San Jose. Suddenly Threets is a starter. (Maybe he can start but seems awfully late in his career to make that decision.) Pablo Sandoval's a catcher. (Does he have a background in that I'm not aware of?) Witter and Newton made big jumps this year. Do I need to cite more examples of decisions that could at least be characterized as curious? Maybe some of these jumps are a sign of confidence in how quickly these guys can come on, but a lot of guys would be overwhelmed by such big moves. There's a big difference between Salem-Keizer and San Jose. Other of the decisions, though, just seem strange, capricious even.

As for the guys at [sign in to see URL] would you rather see at Fresno, Kinney or Begg? Kinney or (having already made the jump) Pereira? Why did Misch have to wait so long behind the dregs that have been at Fresno the past few years? (Yeah, I know he had that one bad year, but after he seemingly turned it around back at Connecticut, it seemed like it took him an inordinately long time before they gave him another [sign in to see URL] why? So Brian Cooper could stay in Fresno's rotation???) You yourself said the Fresno bullpen looks weak this [sign in to see URL] if they're going to bump guys 2 levels at a time, why NOT take a shot at Anderson or Hedrick, in place of Atchison, or in place of this unnatural attraction for Ryan Meaux?

I don't know. Maybe all of this is easily explicable, and I'd just end up saying 'oh, now I see, I take it all back.' But, as of now, all I can do is scratch my head and wonder.

But thanks for the updates. Dyche being injured does explain why Nunez is suddenly at San Jose; he's just holding Dyche's roster spot. It'll be interesting to see where Velez goes when he's [sign in to see URL] to replace Wald? If Burriss can jump to San Jose, can Velez jump to AA?

A lot is [sign in to see URL], for instance. Timpner moved up to CT with his teammates from San Jose, and THEN made the jump to Fresno when the team needed a CF desperately. Similar story with Pereira; Fresno needed a pitcher, and no one in CT was ready. Ortmeier went on a yo-yo because he sucked in Fresno. Misch was because he lost his mechanics, and he was continuing to get them back last spring when he was starting the year (and this is coming from Misch's mouth myself).

Some jumps are a sign of confidence (and they work [sign in to see URL] at Pereira's jump from SK to SJ, not to mention Anderson's)....and no, they don't always work out.

There is definitely plenty that we don't see, and a ton of talk done during extended ST. And sometimes it can be an issue is a team needs a certain type of player or there is a block. I have had some issues with how the team has treated players, like Michael Mooney, but I found out he was held back early because the team was working on off-field issues that don't show in the stats (He is a very emotional kid, and he is very hard on himself during slumps).

No one is going to agree with every move, 100% of the time, but I'd say trust the team. They work with these kids and see what we don't.

And the team was pretty much set on Velez at Double-A, but we'll see where the hand takes him.
