GAMEBALL and JERK TUESDAY 04/03 SAN DIEGO PADRES at SF GIANTS

GAMEBALL and JERK OPENING DAY
TUESDAY 04/03 SAN DIEGO PADRES at SF GIANTS

If you aren’t familiar with GB and JK please note I tend to suspend most rational thought and try to react from the gut.
Additionally, please feel free to add your own or disagree with my opinions (it’s always more fun that way)...

GAMEBALL

Giant All Stars

The Day started on a high note, with the Giants welcoming home 25 former all stars in a pre game ceremony. This was a special moment for me as I got to cheer for two of the heros of my youth, Will Clark, and Jeffrey Leonard.
I got chills as my mind leapt back to my formative years at the Stick, when baseball was new and exciting and I my mind was unfettered by the thoughts of deferred salaries, performance enhancers, postseason failure, and $30 parking.
And I think thats one of the reasons why many of us still love the game well into adulthood. A baseball ticket is a passport into a world we can cheer and heckle and scream and cry like we are a kid again....
And today there was something for everybody, from Stu Miller and Stretch, to Nen and Aurilia...
Giants heros past and present felt the warmth of the fans love once more.... and something tells me that the players loved it just as much as their fans......
So lets extend this opening day love fest just a bit longer and offer up the GAMEBALL to the ALL STARS of GIANTS PAST......

TIP OF THE CAP emoticon
RAY
New contract?
Aren’t you supposed to be slackin
Well nobody told the Giants new cleanup hitter, as he was the only highlight of Giants present.....
Two sparkling defensive plays into the hole, and the only frozen rope hit off Peavy all day.... all without pulling a hamstring.....

MANDO
Well, look who’s suddenly Mr Congenial....
Mando was outgoing and gregarious in the dugout in pregame huggin and highfivin everyone in sight.... Pushing your way into the midst of Lowry and Morris and other popular clubhouse figures.....
All smiles and laughs, muggin for the cameras like he was running for senate....
He did everything short of kissing babies, which is certainly a relief for the babies....

MARK GRANT
Don’t think I have ever given kudos to the opponents broadcaster before.....but apparently this guy is more than part of the package that brought up Mitchell, Lefferts, and Dravecky..... This guy is !@#$ hilarious......
In a pre game interview on KNBR, this guy was reliving his Giants past, and doing some impressions that made me wanting more.....
Sounds like the Padres have something great going down there that makes them think of Grant, like we would think of Krukow.....
So give it up for Grant, and if you ever want FP’s job give us a call....

JERK
:jerk:
FELIZ
Image
!@#$, right where we left off.....
Why is this guy still on the team?
Hell, why is he being paid $5 Million?
The guy has oodles of talent, soft hands, rocket arm, and power that makes scouts drool.....
But the guy has shown again and again he is a marginal major leaguer player, let alone a front line starter.....
Pedro is the classic case of a player whose head keeps getting in the way of his talent....
Pedro has long been a strike out machine, so it comes to no surprise he racked up 2 more today....
But the part that REALLY pisses me off, is the inconsistent glove that appeared late last year found its way into todays game. And don’t give me that he’s started every game and he’s tired !@#$...
This is Openfucking Day for Christsakes. He’s never gonna be more rested....
And how the !@#$ do you BOOT a BALL that’s in the WEB OF YOUR GLOVE????
!@#$, if Aurilia doesn’t take this JERK’s place by midseason, I will personally go into the clubhouse and scratch his name off the lineup card....

SMACK OF THE STICK emoticon
BARRY 1
!@#$, this pains me.....but you worked your way to the bottom of this post.....
Looking great in the field, thinner and faster and looking better than we have seen in years.....
Hell even his arm looks improved as he WHIPPED balls back to the infield......
Feeling so confident that he easily swiped a base in the first inning.....
But unseen to TV Viewers, Barry screwed the pooch in that inning....
Seeing the grounder from Durham safely scooped up by Khalil, Barry let up and started to trot....only to have the ball trickle away from first....
Barry woulda walked right into the dugout if it wasn’t for his teammates screaming at him to run....but it was too late.....and Barry Hustle was suddenly transformed into Barry Lollygagger......

BARRY 2
Sure, a home opener versus Peavy is a talk task and Barry looked good for a few innings....
But after the Pedro bobble, Zito seemed to lose something and he was soon out of the game.....
Sure I didn’t expect a 2 hit shutout, but when you are the ace and you WALK in a RUN.....that is a sure smack of the stick......

Peavy pitched a hellova game. I tip my hat. The G's fell apart after all that celebration, but they'll rebound.

Good points all around the board.

I figured Bonds must have jogged to third on the ball hit by Durham, also didn't help that he was indecisive coming around third. Although I was at the game my eye was on the ball during that play more than anything so I missed Barry's lack of hustle. Still great to see him running fairly well though.

I also loved the pre-game with all the former Giant All-Stars. That was the first chance I've had to give Will Clark a standing ovation since his playing days. Damn do I miss his sweet swing and attitude. On the post-game wrap, Krukow was talking about how when Will ran out from RF a few players after him he told Kruk how much he missed this all. Great to hear that a Giant legend felt the ovation. He's certainly missed around the yard.

Yeah, back in the day the Stick would go crazy anytime Will was announced. Similar in to what Barry gets everytime up.

Makes me think back to 1993 when the touch was passed to Barry. And when you think about it in that context, for the first time since Will's rookie year the 2008 Giants are faced with no "truly beloved" star in the lineup... that's gonna feel pretty strange.....

Of course the ownership will try and use Zito as the beloved star but pitchers are typically on a second tier of popularity because they aren't out there every day. Also doesn't help that Zito will only be in his 2nd yr as a Giant.

One last note about Will. You can tell he still had the same "Thrill" attitude just by the way he walked. Even without a name on his jersey or a face you could tell it was him.

Peavy continues to own us! I was worried going into the game...

Now we'll see how the guys rebound with Cain on the mound!!!

Dodgers 0-2

Merk knows I throw in my two cents worth either before or after the fact...today it is after as I had a 4 hour road trip each way...but here it goes...

emoticon to all of those terrific Giant All Stars....I saw all but a couple of these guys at one time or another in their careers with the Giants and what a thrill to reminisce about old times...most looked pretty darned good (and will have pictures up in a day or so)

emoticon to the new high def scoreboard...very impressive...great pictures...gets my vote!

oh...then there was the game...

:ray: played great defense...a web gem to boot...just wish he had generated a little more offense (but more on that later)

emoticon to Randy Winn who had a good day with the bat...hope last year was just an anomaly and you return to 2005 form

emoticon to the head to our offense...out of synch, lackluster, flat....whatever it is, hope it is just a matter of time to get things moving but just was not hitting on all cylinders today.

emoticon to Bonds...yes folks, if you didn't see it, he thought Durham was out at first and dogged it to third...had he been running like there had been a play, we might have gotten a run. Barry, you may be almost 43, but Little Leaguers run everything out...be an example out on the basepaths and quit looking like a slacker. But, emoticon before all of that for hitting it to the left side (if he does that all year, the shift will be worthless) and stealing second...about the only fire this team had all day.

Bad first day for Zito but we hope his next start will have a bit more zip to it emoticon

Wednesday is another day...Matt Cain will show us how it's done... emoticon

Despite it all, we have to give a emoticon to Barry for the stolen base. Dude could still easily beat me in a foot race. I was pumped.

(nevermind the rest of the game)

I blame it all on my Aurilia bobblehead. It failed me before and I gave it another chance but after this emoticon it's gunna grab some pine for a very long time.
