Well, it's the first inning of the season and the "aggressive" style has already backfired once. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bhaakon)Tue, 03 Apr 2007 13:56:26 +0000 Re: …https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394259,from=rss#post394259https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394259,from=rss#post394259I wonder if the coaches are even going to have a steal sign this season.nondisclosed_email@example.com (byco42)Mon, 02 Apr 2007 10:47:41 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394244,from=rss#post394244https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394244,from=rss#post394244Giants downward spiral began with inexplicable dispatching of Wendell Kim. So, yeah. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bhaakon)Sun, 01 Apr 2007 18:56:15 +0000 Coach Flannery to bring 'aggressive' style to third basehttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394110,from=rss#post394110https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p394110,from=rss#post394110John Shea Sunday, April 1, 2007 In some ways, Tim Flannery's popularity in San Diego rivaled Tony Gwynn's. As a player, coach and broadcaster, Flannery was proud to live up to the laid-back, surfer, guitar-playing image. In San Francisco, as Bruce Bochy's only hand-picked coach, Flannery is relatively unknown, though he served as the Padres' third-base coach for seven years (1996-2002) and often found himself coaching third while managing three years in the Padres' farm system (1993-95). "I was in the organization 25 years," Flannery said Saturday. "People here might not know me, but if they look back on what I've done as a third-base coach, I think they could relax, take a deep breath and enjoy the game. We've got it all covered." Flannery admitted he made a mistake or two in Arizona, but spring training is for coaches, too. Asked what fans can expect of him, Flannery said, "I'm usually very, very aggressive, but I also have to be a realist that we've got guys up in age and we have to keep them healthy. I can't just jam people home with two outs. On the flip side, being a veteran ballclub, we've got guys who know how to hit with two outs. "Coaching third base is about tendencies, and that's what I'm learning, how people react in certain situations. I love the young guys -- Todd Linden is an incredible baserunner. (Dave) Roberts and (Omar) Vizquel are incredible baserunners. Barry Bonds was one of the greatest baserunners in history." On that note, Flannery knows the golden rule for a Giants third-base coach. "I'm going to try not to have anybody thrown out with Barry Bonds coming up," he said. Briefly: Bonds received a new shipment of bats before the game but didn't get a chance to use them. After playing left field Thursday and Friday, Bonds did not play Saturday, a 6-4 loss to the A's. He's scheduled to be the designated hitter today in Oakland. He has appeared in 17 of 33 exhibitions -- 10 in left field, covering 44 innings. He said it was enough defensive work to prepare him for the season. ... In his final spring training outing, Matt Morris lasted 32/3 innings and surrendered four runs and eight hits. He'll pitch the third game of the season, Thursday against the Padres. ... Leadoff man Dave Roberts went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and a stolen base, his second of spring training. "For me, it doesn't serve a purpose to steal 10 bases in the spring," said Roberts, who swiped 49 bags last year for San Diego. This article appeared on page C - 4 of the San Francisco Chronicle original here ---------------------- good to know he won't get creative and send someone home with 2 outs. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Monkey51)Sun, 01 Apr 2007 18:45:02 +0000
