!@#$: ESPN Reporting Chargers will hire Norv Turner

Sources: Chargers will hire Turner as next head coach
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Hoping the third time will be a winner for Norv Turner, the San Diego Chargers on Monday morning reached agreement with the San Francisco offensive coordinator to succeed Marty Schottenheimer as head coach, ESPN.com has learned.

Turner, 54, compiled a 59-83-1 record as head coach of the Washington Redskins (1994-2000) and the Oakland Raiders (2004-2005). He served as the San Francisco offensive coordinator last season and was credited with the dramatic progress achieved by 49ers' second-year quarterback Alex Smith.

Contract details were not immediately available, but league sources and also sources close to Turner said the two sides were in accord on all major components.

One of six known candidates interviewed by San Diego officials after Schottenheimer was dismissed, Turner was the lone man with primary expertise on the offensive side. Originally, it was believed the Chargers preferred that their new head coach have a background on the defensive side of the ball.

Turner interviewed earlier this month for the head coach vacancy in Dallas, where he played a big role as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator during the team's dominance in the 1990s, but did not land that job.

In San Diego, he will inherit a high-octane Chargers offense featuring star tailback and 2006 most valuable player LaDainian Tomlinson. But Turner will also be responsible for the continued development of quarterback Philip Rivers, who was in his first year as the starter in 2006.

Longtime league assistant coach Ted Cottrell, whose experience with the 3-4 defense is extensive, will meet early this week with San Diego officials about the position of defensive coordinator for the Chargers, ESPN.com has learned.

The interview could take place as early as Monday and, barring complications, should result in the Chargers hiring Cottrell, who worked in the NFL office in 2006. It is believed Turner has already approved the addition of Cottrell to his staff.

The focus on Cottrell, who has a past history with San Diego general manager A.J. Smith, suggested earlier Monday that the Chargers were strongly considering hiring Tuner as their head coach.

Beyond Turner, the other known San Diego head coach candidates Gary Gibbs (New Orleans), Mike Zimmer (Atlanta), Mike Singletary (San Francisco), Ron Rivera (Chicago) and Rex Ryan (Baltimore) are all coaches whose expertise is on the defensive side. All but Singletary are current coordinators.

Landing Cottrell for the defensive post, and adding Turner as head coach, could provide the Chargers the best of all worlds.

Cottrell has interviewed in the past for head coach positions, and came very close to landing the top job in San Francisco four years ago, but the meeting with Chargers officials is strictly an interview for the team's defensive coordinator spot, several sources said.

San Diego officials prefer to retain a 3-4 defense, the scheme for which the personnel is best suited, and hiring Cottrell would permit that. Cottrell was actually recommended to Schottenheimer by Smith when then-Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was hired by the Dallas Cowboys as their new head coach.

Schottenheimer instead leaned toward hiring his younger brother, Kurt Schottenheimer, as the replacement for Phillips. In addition to Marty Schottenheimer, the Chargers, who posted an NFL-best 14-2 record in 2006 but were ousted in the divisional round of the playoffs, have lost five assistant coaches since the end of the season. That includes both coordinators.

Cottrell, 59, possesses 22 seasons of NFL experience as an assistant coach, including three stints as a defensive coordinator. He most recently worked as coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings (2004-2005). Cottrell lost his job when the Vikings fired coach Mike Tice after the 2005 season, and he worked in the NFL office in 2006.

--------------------------

Oh well, I say !@#$ him anyway. Any OC that interviews TWICE in 3 weeks after getting a raise is a dick anyway. Sure, our offense LOOKED better with him last year, but check the facts: We moved up from 32nd in the league in total offense to.... 28th.

What this DOES show is that Mike Nolan is a serious pimp. Look at it this way; he put together a great staff if teams keep interviewing all our coordinators for head coaching jobs!! emoticon

He's going into another bad management situation and he will be a puppet. I really wanted him to stay but evidently he needs that Head Coach ego. Down here in SoCal all they've been saying was that AJ Smith (chargers gm)wanted to bring in Cotrell...but Schottie wanted his brother to come in and be DC. That lead to Marty's firing...and now I think it's funny that it's coming out that Norv wants Cotrell. IT's crap...the guy is a puppet and if he can't win with the talent they have in SD he's going get fired inside of two years. Hopefully his contract will be front end loaded!!! I'm sad b/c I was really looking forward to Alex growing another year under Norv...but I fear the 49ers 3rd OC in 3 years is going to set him back....or at minimum stunt his growth/learning curve. Any ideas who will be stepping up in the OC role? Will it be from within? I don't know if it's at all possible- but I would be open to a Steve Sarkisian hiring...OC for the USC Trojans. He's probably got a good gig going though... Any other promising QB coach's in the NFL that may be a potential hire?

Yep, 3 coaches in 3 seasons sucks ass for smith. BUT the guy is very smart, and I'm sure Nolan will find an OC with a similar power-running scheme to replace Turner.

Personally, I think they hired Norv as an interim until Cower returns to coaching. Norv is a proven loser, so he might be a good segue. emoticon

ESPN reporting RON RIVERA was just fired as the Bears defensive coordinator. I know Nolan fired our DC late last season... did we pick someone up yet?? Could we get Rivera???

Nolan hired the chargers' linebacker coach, who was in line to become the DC. I heard that Nolan had him watch game film and call plays and that he was correct on them all. If he can impress Nolan then he's pretty damn good.

Right on. I know what you mean, I love Nolan. The guy just makes me feel like we're going in the right direction. But then, after ERIKSON....?? emoticon

When Norv signed with the 49ers he said he'd be here for a long time. WHAT A LYING SOB. I hope the Chargers tank.

Norv would have been insane not to take this job...but I really wish he hadn't, good things were brewing here, and he had a lot to do with it. I'd really like to see the Chargers do well, unless we're facing them in the Superbowl (puts down the crack pipe).

Re: !@#$: ESPN Reporting Chargers will hire Norv Turner

The more I think about it, I'm not too concerned about Norv leaving, actually.

I know you all think I'm crazy now. Maybe I am!! =D

Still, although some of his trick plays worked (what, like 3 of them?) ... all he did was hand off to Gore. I mean, really. Running the football! What a genius!!

The offense LOOKED better (and was better in the endzone) than last season, but really now... he took the 32nd-ranked offense all the way up to... 28th. Not exactly a huge improvement. Run the football!

I think what really happened was we got rid of the dead weight (barlow) and replaced it with PROBOWL material (gore). The O Line was WAAAY better. The running game opened up the passing game, allowing for *gasp* play-action. Every facet of offense benefited.

I'm not saying Norv didn't do well. I felt very good with him behind the helm... (I liked the smell®) However, I don't see the team regressing much (if at all) with his departure, as long as they stick with the "Run first", "Run second", "Ok... now pass" philosophy.

(why is HALL & OATS "SHE'S GONE" running through my head??)

that's because nobody on the planet thought he'd be getting any head coaching offers anytime soon this time last year

I remember listening to some radio station driving to the bay last year, the d.j. announcing that norv fresh off the raiders fiasco would be the niners new OC, the d.j. and the others in the studio just started busting up hysterically. Got this kind of reaction from all raider fans that i've run across along with some niner fans.

things change that fast. for one, i never bought into his "it has to be a unique job" line that he was throwing down.He has ego and he wants to prove that his past failures were more the result of crappy situations rather than his inability to be a good HC

kind of a bummer
