My question to those against the Zito deal

Would you rather have Zito at 7/126 or the likes of Meche, Lilly, and Suppan for 4/40+ to 5/50+?

Obviously they could have chosen to avoid either route but that wasn't plausible with this ownership and GM.

I'd rather have Lilly or Suppan, yes.

I'd rather have Lilly AND Suppan, actually.

Obviously you value quantity over quality. The Giants would of had to pay almost the same and get less. If you give Zito 4 runs he's unbeatable...look it up.

One caveat to that stat about Zito: the A's had a much better bullpen than what the Giants have at the moment.

True, but according to ESPN radio when Zito was still in the game if the A's gave him 4+ runs he was 14-0 last year and something like 83-5 in his career. This doesn't include blown saves or any bullpen factors.

Depending on the Giants offense = recipe for disaster.

Suppan and Lilly are average pitchers, but at least they'd be gone in four years.

Zito might be worth the money for the next 2-3 seasons, but the Giants won't be in a position to parlay that into a run of contention. By the time the Giants have rebuilt from within, Zito's contract will be deadweight.

Re: My question to those against the Zito deal

I would take Lilly for 4 years, 40M in a heartbeat. Aside from one bad injury year in '05, he's been a bit more comparable to Zito lately than you'd think.

2006
Lilly: 181 IP, 160K/81BB, 179 Hits
Zito: 221 IP, 151K/99BB, 211 Hits

Zito pitched more innings, but that can be attributed to the A's management more than durability, as Lilly made roughly the same number of starts.

Lilly struck out more per inning, and walked less. They both allowed close to the same number of hits per inning. Sure, Lilly is a year and a half older, but he signed without that pesky $136 million contract.

So in 4 years he drops to a #3 or #4 type pitcher, at $18 mill for someone that will pitch 180-200 innings will be a steal the way free agent market have been going.

What do you think about Mike Hampton's contract?
