True, Correia did do a great job out of the pen. I just think he deserves a chance to start more games to see if he has it. He's in a Todd Linden situation, seeing his role decreased as he matures. In '05 he started 11 games and came out of the pen for five. In '06 he had zero starts. With the big question marks at the end of the rotation, having Correia, VSOP and maybe a third young arm battling for it would benefit all parties involved. With Wilson, Taschner, Munter, Worrell, Chulk, Benitez, Kline and possibly Sadler all in the pen, a fifth starter position for Kevin would make it possible to keep them all on 25. nondisclosed_email@example.com (chefjuan)Mon, 25 Dec 2006 23:50:38 +0000 Re: Damn! He's the league leader in saves. The only pitcher that's looked more impressive in the PR is Bruce Chen! The only time I even both to look them up is to check out the health of a player who missed most/all of the previous season, they're vitually useless. I certainly wouldn't make any roster decisions based on them. quote:the walk problem is something that plagues all young pitchers. It was Matt Cain's achilles when he first came up. He walked almost a batter and inning for his first two months in majors. IMO, it's a confidence issue that works it's way out once a young pitcher realizes he can get everyone out. I think Wilson has the stuff and I think his confidence will be there too come ST. Walks are still Cain's Achilles heel. He's not going to be a legit ace until he shaves the better part of one walk per game off that 4.11 BB/9 mark from last season. You are correct that alot of young pitchers have command issues, but it's also true that they rarely iron them out as quickly as you suggest. Wilson's career walk rate in the PCL is about 5 BB per nine, so this probably isn't rookies jitters or an injury. It's also not the PCL inflating walks, since his BB totals were simply too inflated to be reasonably excused by league effects.  quote:I still think Corriea has a chance to crack the rotation. He's showed that he can be effective for multiple innings. He had quite a few of those four to six inning relief appearances. He had two 4-6 IP appearances. He was the closest thing the Giants had to a shut-down reliever last season, and it was the first time in quite awhile that he managed to sustain success in any role. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bhaakon)Mon, 25 Dec 2006 01:57:53 +0000 Re: Damn! You think he'd get the first crack over Correia? They both have sufficient stuff, but only one has displayed the ability to pitch in the majors. Seriously, Wilson walked 21 players in 30 IP last season (36 BB in 59 IP, including his minor league performances), he's got alot to prove before being annointed closer of the future, let alone closer of the present. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Bhaakon)Sun, 24 Dec 2006 16:08:42 +0000 Re: Damn! They only way I can see Wilson not closing games by August is if he has injury problems. If he comes into ST looking like he has in PR, Benitez will be out of a jobnondisclosed_email@example.com (chefjuan)Sun, 24 Dec 2006 11:16:58 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p388610,from=rss#post388610https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p388610,from=rss#post388610I think all the choices we need are in house. The Indians should have gone for quality over quantity instead of bringing in four new relievers. Maybe they've gotten some here, but Foulke could as easily be a bust as he could be the team's best reliever. It appears he'll get a one-year deal, perhaps with a player option for 2008. He'll compete with Joe Borowski for the closer's role.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Giants 1)Sat, 23 Dec 2006 10:36:50 +0000
