Can this team contend in 2007???
How far do you think this team is from making a serious run at the division title?
If things break the right way, do they have a chance?
If Morris Lowry and Bonds bounce back?
Do they need another hitter or pitcher in order to even consider it?

They need another good starter to have a legitimate chance at the postseason, hopefully Zito.
Even at that they need a lot of luck in the health department and minimal decline from Aurilia, Bonds, Molina, Roberts, Durham, and Vizquel. The young arms in the pen will have to step up and Benitez will have to be effective.

I think it's unrealistic to expect Bonds to get even close to his 2004 form. Last year is a better indicator of how he'll perform, with regression from those numbers more than possible but probable.
Morris is a lame pitcher who might perform slightly better.
But with the loss of Schmidt, the starting pitching takes a hit. I still don't think the bullpen is more than C+ right now, and the back end of the rotation is still all ??????
And the offense is going to suck about as much as last year's.
So, no. I don't think the Giants have a chance to contend for a division title this season and we will watch the 3rd consecutive losing season for the first time in TPFKAPBP.

Now that is a funny question. Really it is.
Short answer would be.......NO
Third place tops with a great better chance to finish last.
Just sayin'

Yeah
This is a team that could really make a charge........ at 500
Methinks even if things break just right for the Giants with this team, they are still one big hitter away from contending

They're one big hitter, one big starter, and at least one big reliever away from being in a three-way race with the Dodgers and Padres.
As it is, their offense is about as good as last season (if Klesko can be return to 2005 form), and the pitching staff is markedly worse.

the offense is definitely capable, I just don't know about the OF defense (though it'll probably hold up as it did last year).
Obviously pitching is the biggest ? David wells and some relief help would make this team contend for the NL west title. Barring injury of course.

I feel the offense will outperform last year. Maybe in the end put up similar numbers, yet they will be far more successful with playing "small ball" given Dave Roberts speed. Hopefully Molina will regain some of his defense.
On the whole, if one of the younger pitchers picks it way up, or if the Giants pick up a solid starter, I feel they could win the West.
They have a team of a lot of really good players. And, sometimes if they come together and play well together, a lot of good players can outshine a team with a couple great ones.
I just hope that Beantestes can somehow stay healthy or is traded.
And, the worst part of all of it is that I *didn't* want the Giants to contend. To me it just seems like delaying the inevitable; that the Giants need to rebuild. And, rebuild with ≤30 year olds and prospects... so I hoped that the Giants would be somewhat like the Niners and the Warriors. Show signs of competitiveness, and then suck, and back to being good, etc, and to see young players progress with a solid core. Unfortunately, Sabean is a moron it seems, and he continually signs aging vets hoping for one last run.

Re: Can this team contend in 2007???
I dont think this team can contend in 2007 because the Giants dont have much of a power threat beside Barry (i doubt Richie, Feliz and Rayray will repeat their 2006 numbers and Klesko probably wont have the power he had in 96, 01 or 02), dont really have an ace in the starting rotation (Cain isnt ready yet) and the bullpen could use some improvements.
