Abreu: not bad but isn't he older then ichiro and his power has been declining.

Abreu is a year younger and his OPS is stable. He doesn't hit home runs, but he gets on base and drives in runs.

Abreu would be a great fit but I'd be willing to bet that he re-signs with the Spankees.

Just sayin'

I am really starting to think that Giants fans don't want good players on our team.

I want players who are good now, not overpaid for their level of production, and will likely still be in or near his prime by the time the Giants have constructed a playoff quality squad.

I don't think Ichiro fits #2 or #3 on that list. He's a quality player, but he's not as good as the hype surrounding him, and, as has been noted, he'll be 34.

I also don't think he's a good enough hitter to build around. A peak at the Mariners' teams he has been on will tell you that. If he's the best hitter on your squad, you probably have a crappy lineup. He's going to be paid like a legitimate centerpiece, but he simply isn't one.

I honestly can't think of a single FA now or in the very near future who fits all three characteristics.

I agree that Wells and Abreu will likely never see the FA market.

I also agree with Bhaakon on Ichiro.

I will also be surprised of Chicago lets zambrano get away. They got Lee locked up in April of his contract year, they'll probably attempt to do the same with Zambrano.

The problem with FA's is that they are generally in the 32-34 age range. And that doesn't work well with what the Giants have in place right now.

That's why Dunn, Wells, and Zambrano especially desirable. They are all under 30. Zambrano is only 25. All the other guys on that list have 2-3 years left of their current production level at the most.

Remember that Furcal contract that seemed insane at the time? Colletti was paying a premium for three seasons so he wouldn't have to pay for years 4 and 5 when Furcal will still be hitting .270 but with half the stolen bases and half the range at SS.

Travis Ishikawa is NOT a competent first baseman.

Then the Giants will sign him for a slightly higher amount for 4-5 years.

I think Cris Carpenter is also availble in 07. But my guess is he either resign with the cards or end in either NY.

I think the giants can afford a bigger payroll at around 110-120 even with the stadium debt. But still not enough to out bid the yankees or red sox if they really want a player. And the Yankee will want carpenter and zambrano if both players hits the market. The yankees got a lot holes in thier pitching staff.

The giants might have money to spend but not as much as the yankees.

Neither can I, really. Certainly none of star status. Huff may be that kind of player this season (depending on what he signs for, of course), but he's even less of a centerpiece than Ichiro.

If you're going to vastly overpay for someone, at least make sure he'd a serviceable centerpiece. Ignoring age and the fact that he'll get paid a surplus for his fame and charisma, my main problem with Ichiro is that you'd have to have two or thee other guys who are just as good or better to make a respectable lineup (and no major holes). That's just not something the Giants can afford.
