The 49ers will not make the playoffs because they will lose to my Broncos and the Seahawks will beat Tampa. But it has been an encouraging season for 49er fans in comparison to what they did last year.
There's really no big name free agents out there other than Dwight Freeney (who's having a bad season through 14 games) and Lance Briggs (if the Bears don't franchise him). Also Asante Samuel and Nate Clements are 2 pretty good CB's.

And Larry Allen was signed to a 2 year deal.

Ok first of all, the York is cheap thing was cool like 2 years ago but I challenge anyone to cite an example of him being cheap in the past 2 years.
Second, I'm very excited about the direction they're going with a young offense and some good young players on defense to build around. They have a load of cap room this season and the best defensive player available will be Adalius Thomas of the Ravens. Nolan has an in their already as he coached him at Baltimore. Sign him, make a run at Samuel and draft well and I'll be stoked.

Do the 49ers make the playoffs this year
Good points above. The cap space should go towards getting a star pass rusher or corner (the guys mentioned), and the draft should go to satisfy whatever position is not filled in FA.
Niners should also get Drew Bennett as the #2 receiver (unless there's a real #1 out there which I don't see). Hometown guy, great possession receiver, good blocker. Nolan guy.
