Some of us might not consider Zito to be a top player.
In 2000, ARod got $25 million, Manny and Delgado got $20 million and the next year, Vlad signed for < $15 million.
Sometimes, they do shrink.
I don't think the Giants are starving either, I just think there may be a #1 pitcher or middle of the lineup hitter available next year or the year after for $20 million that will help more than a declining (?) #2 starter.
Good point. But... I don't think Zito is declining. Yes, he hasn't won 20 games or a cy young in a few years, but dude is only, what, 26-27? I don't think he'll start declining until early 31-32.

He's 28 and his peripherals portend to mediocrity and not stardom.
He's not an ace, he's a #2 guy. Even the year he won the CY and every other year in Oakland.

You do realize that if everyone pitches the same as they did last season the Giants' rotation won't be any better than in 2006?

2000-2003: 3.12 ERA, 7.16 K/9 IP, 3.41 BB/9 IP
2004-2006: 4.05 ERA, 6.59 K/9 IP, 3.65 BB/9 IP
Maybe the peripherals didn't decline too sharply, but that isn't a rise.
Don't judge age as something where it affects everyone the same way. It doesn't, nor is it the only factor in a rise or a decline.

Carlos Zambrano (25), Mark Buerhle (27), Colon (33).
If we can get any of those, especially Zambrano...

Giants considering offering zito a 6year/120 million.
Buerhle and Colon are not as good as Zito.

I don't know that it matters. How about asking, who will be available for $20 million per year over the next 6 years that will be better? That's a long list.
Also, who might be available that, while not quite as good as a Zito (4 ERA, 1.4 WHIP, 27 HRs), will give the Giants more payroll flexibility?
