Right there with you on that one. I think the injury he hid really affected him. He had some very good stretches early in the year prior to that injury.

I don't expect his St. Louis numbers, but at least an era in the low 4's.

His future very well may be at 2B but he can't afford to ride the pine for two more years. With Durham signed for 2 years, he will be forced to play SS or 3B. He's seen time at all 3 positions and been adequate.

Franny can play 3b as well. With Aurilia around, it doesn't look like Ray will move to 1b.

We've all seen Sabean's hesitations when it comes to letting young talent get their feet wet. Do you honestly thing Sabean will go into '08 with Frandsen at SS? No F'n way!

Sabean could have given Frandsen a shot this year and what does he do? He re-signs Durham. Sabean will sign some vet to play short...and maybe by '09 we'll have the opportunity to see what Frandsen can do with 2B all to himself...where his future is...doesn't matter whether or not he can afford to ride the pine or not. Frandsen is already 24, soon to be 25. Unless he has a poor year off the bench this year (which is possible with a lack of playing time), then he will see a significant role in '08.

Part of the reason you haven't seen Sabean go with young players in the field is because most of them have sucked ass. In recent years, Linden and Torrealba are really the only guys you could make an argument for that should have seen playing time and haven't. Neither of them exactly showed great promise, but were decent options.

Giants considering offering zito a 6year/120 million.

The whole situtation depends on if the Giants are going to raise thier payroll. If the giants are willing to keep the payroll along with what a Zito contract would cost then the giants should be able to get at least 1 big bat to replace bonds possibliy 2.

After 07 Bonds, benetize and vizquel would be gone. Thats approximately 30 million. If Zito, Cain and Lowry pitchs well and correia or whoever the 5th guy is at least halfway decent Then the giants can trade morris. Morris isn't the pitcher he used to be but at 8 or 10 million whatever he is owe in 08 he should be tradeble and the giants wouldn't even have to pay any of his salary. Thats 38-40 million availble if the giants are willing to keep the payroll that high.

After subtracting for cain and lowry and any pay raises. That is still 30million availble. The giants should be able to get 2 big bats for 30 million.

Also the giants can't really count on who would be availble next yr to sign. With the money being thrown this offseason. Some of the teams with these big name player might offer big money on a contract extension, a couple of these players might decide take those extensions. Thereby taking themselves out of the market. If i am VFW, unless i absolutely hate the BJ and toranto i would seriously consider taking that 120+ contract extension.

6/120M is CRAZY, but........

CONTRACTS ARE NOT GOING TO SHRINK

Here's the sad, sad facts folks:

Just like Real Estate and Taxes, sports contract will ALWAYS rise. Waiting until "next year" to get a top-flight free agent will not lower the prices. In fact, if we sit here and cry and wait for next year's free agent market, those players will be much more expensive because of THIS YEAR'S free agent signings.

Why the hell would Andruw Jones sign for 5/90M when ALFONZO !@#$ SORIANO just signed for 8/136M?? He'll be saying "I'm better than that jerk" and pull in 8/150-160.

It will not stop.
(until there is a salary cap)

If we want a player, we have to pay what it takes to get him. Period.

Listen, no one in the giants ownership is starving. They are making cash HAND OVER FIST, just like the rest of the league. If they wanted to, I guarentee they could up the payroll to 150M and still turn a sizable profit.

This is the game today. Sign Zito for 6/110. They ain't gettin any cheaper.

Well put!
That's why we didn't sign Vladimir Guerrero in 2004 and signed Tucker instead.
That's why we signed Tomko and Herges...

I agree Zito is not an ace anymore. He would be a great asset but I don't think he can be that ace anymore.
But if we are going to take any chance at signing Vernon Wells or Andruw Jones next year we will have to overpay, and we will have to stop complaining about overpaying.

Some of us might not consider Zito to be a top player.
In 2000, ARod got $25 million, Manny and Delgado got $20 million and the next year, Vlad signed for < $15 million.
Sometimes, they do shrink.

I don't think the Giants are starving either, I just think there may be a #1 pitcher or middle of the lineup hitter available next year or the year after for $20 million that will help more than a declining (?) #2 starter.
