benitez mentioned again

i know this has been talked about... but i saw it again this am... kinda brightened my day a little

Mike Powers, Armando Benitez's Baltimore-based agent, says his client would embrace a return to the Florida Marlins.

The team continues to explore the idea of acquiring Benitez from the San Francisco Giants, who signed him to a three-year, $21.5 million contract after his outstanding 2004 season in Florida.

Indications are the Giants would absorb a chunk of Benitez's $7.6 million 2007 base salary to be rid of him.

Oh please let it be true. Please let him disappear. Get rid of him at any cost. At least it frees up a roster spot, and spares all of us fron the routine heart attacks.

As much as we deservedly hate Suckmando DieAlreadynitez, he isn't an atrocious pitcher, just a bad closer. If Florida wants him, the Giants would continue to make their case for mental retardation if they didn't get something halfway decent in return. I'm talking one player who's either AAAA or ML-ready.

The Giants have no other option to close games right now.
Benitez is is contract year, maybe he will have a good season.
With that said, I'm not against moving Benitez, not at all, but we need something in return.

What do people want? Yes, Armando, supposedly the "worst teammate ever" but still his numbers outside of too many blown saves wasn't that bad. Do people want another Livo deal where the Giants pay another team 100% of the guys salary and the Giants get a Brower-type player back in return? I say keep Armando, hope he stays healthy and screws his head back on right, so come the trade deadline the Giants can trade him for a decent prospect without paying another team to take him off the Giants hands.

I know Blownitez sucks but I think it's time the Giants get "something" for these guys that Sabean keeps signing instead of just saying, "well it didn't work out".

Just sayin'

What is this hope business? We're all hoping that this roster will be better than we know it to be. Stop!

Thrill, you're right on about the Giants getting something in return for Benitez. What you've said about his numbers outside the blown saves is accurate. I said as much a few posts up. But rather than wait around for half a season, hoping he doesn't get hurt, post a [sign in to see URL] ERA or something worse, why not just trade him for his value now?

This is a Deal or No Deal situation. Sure, we could hold out for a few months and see if we open the right cases, but why get greedy when we can walk away with a deal we can live with right now?

If the Giants are willing to eat a majority of his contract there should be at least a few teams interested in him, especially with the lack of closers in baseball. Cleveland, Atlanta, Florida, Boston, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Cincinnati all have possible openings in the closer role. I imagine at least 2-3 of those teams would bite if the Giants paid most of Benitez's contract. With 2-3 teams interested they should be able to get at least one decent piece in return.

I would like to see Wilson get a shot to close but if they get Zito I would keep Benitez around because they would have a decent shot at contending. Without a Zito-like addition there isn't much reason to have a proven arm around for a closer.

Closers are not as sacred as you might think. A proven arm is one thing, but the Giants reliance on age and veteran savvy, "proven talent" is a misnomer. You want *good* players on your team. F-ucknitez, that tw-atface, is good, despite his many, many, many, many other shortcomings (I am being really unfair, but I just have no sympathy for this a-ssface) is a good player.

BUT,

Finding another good closer isn't impossible. There have been many converted starters/relievers who've become acceptable or top-tier closers. EatShatNitez isn't a premiere closer anymore, so finding comparable production is key. Very doable, even for our Giants.

I agree with you. If we can't get anything decent just keep him.
Just because he is not working you can't just pay him to go play for someone else.

I would love to move Benitez, but for the right package.
Like I said on my previous post, a new manager, contract year and no other closing option, this could contribute for Benitez success this year.

But again, if we have the chance to move him for the right price, MOVE HIM!
