I often laugh when we Giants fans shrug off younger players and say that they've "peaked" but are willing to hope for a stellar rebound season from cagey veterans that litter our team's roster.

Yo don't find Zito's numbers over the past three years to be a concern? You think he is as good as he was in 2002?

there is no basis for this statement about money going farther next year. There are mediocre free agents this year and next year are top tier players and all will be asking for A-Rod or Manny type salaries. Salaries will continue to rise until a cap is decided on. Zito would make the Giants a contender if all the pieces stay healthy. I would love to sign Jones or VFW next year, but the Giants won't(see Vlad) and if they want to sign the best player available right now(Zito) ,then i say do it. Talent is talent, so getting a guy now makes more sense than waiting to get outbid next year(like Soriano, Lee and Thank God GMJ)

Re: Zito or Andruw? Zito or Cabrera? Zito or VFW?

I think his numbers show that he is a solid, if unspectacular, #2 starter on any given team. This market is completely nutso bonkers, so of course Zito will get paid a lot, especially if guys like Batista, Meche and Lilly (guys with proven-to-be-low or outright miserable track records) are making us all cringe with their figures.

The sentiment that he will get paid like a Cy Young is irksome to me because I think Zito is better than the guys who are getting paid $10-$12 million already. And Gagne, a closer AND Cy Young winner is going to get up to $11 million for one season, so, unfortunately the market might dictate that Zito gets anywhere from $14-$16 million. That is outrageous.

BUT, G-fans around here aren't even applying the "if only" label to him, but outright dismissing him, sighting worrisome numbers, etc., disregarding his age and injury history. These are the same people who rationalize Dave Roberts signings and unwittingly tow the Giants' company line.

I think there's some anti-A's snobbery going on here, and I think there's some anti-Surfer Boy stuff going on, too.

I wanted Zito on this team before the season ended, but now that I am so very much against everything Sabean does (even if he somehow traded for VFW or, he he, even Vlad) AND I find the market rates to be sickening and foolish to follow, I think it'd be a bad move.

This team's gonna blow no matter who the #2 starter is or how much he's making.

But the fact that there is no middle ground around here is just staggering to me.

The fact that the market is shallow is driving up the prices for second tier talent like Soriano, Lee and Zito. Next year, there should be a deeper market.
I also recall the market adjusting considerably in 2001 after a crazy 2000 FA market.
Salaries will rise again but I think they will dip again. I also think a cap is not necessary, salaries don't rise faster than revenue.

The Giants have signed the best FA on the market more than once.

He will? How?

Zito will replace Schmidt, but not improve upon him. The offense is virtually identical to last season. Cain, Lowry, and the young relievers can reasonably be expected to improve, but the Giants were 11.5 games out of the playoffs last season, and, despite some questionable long-term signings, the Dodgers are likely to improve in 2007.

Kevin, but I believe Bonds will be better this season. Not pre surgery Bonds, but better than last year. Also, the Giants have a legitimate lead off hitter as well now...

Though I am not ecstatic about the signings and feel that they still lack at least a power hitting first baseman or a power hitting outfielder, the offense will be better than last year. Book it.

All of which might make up for losing 98 games of Moises Alou. Maybe.

I disagree...I think the offense is worse than last year.

I don't disregard Zito's age and injury history, but ultimately, they don't matter nearly as much as his production. And his production the last three years has been 4.48, 3.86, and 3.83 ERA's, with drooping strikeout numbers, rising walk numbers, and more than 25 home runs given up each year in the past three.

That isn't worth paying $14-16M a year, much less the much higher salary per year for 6-7 years he will get.
