Funny pic but Kerry was correct, botched joke or not. They are stuck and the military does their best to recruit people with limited options.

Interesting take, SHK, given that Kerry insists that the slight was directed at the Bush adminstration, and not the military's recruiting practices.
But the either-or inference is what ham- strung him. It's not "attend college, or end up in Iraq," as he clearly implicated. We all know that some dumb stumps attend college.
Civilly,
Byco.

Indeed some dolts do attend college and some very sharp individuals join the military but we know that the wealthy and educated are not who fill the military ranks. How many in the Bush administration served in Vietnam?
I also think that years after Bush proclaimed "Mission Accomplished" the term "stuck" fits when talking about Iraq.
That being said, strategically, it was a stupid move by Kerry.

Re: …
The "Mission Accomplished" sign was the Navy's idea, not the White House's, though the White House supported it and even made the banner ... to commermorate the record-breaking 290-day deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln. It had nothing to do with the success of deposing Saddam.
This, from the speech on the ship:
We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We're bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. We're pursuing and finding leaders of the old regime who will be held to account for their crimes. We've begun the search for hidden chemical and biological weapons, and already know of hundreds of sites that will be investigated.
We are helping to rebuild Iraq where the dictator built palaces for himself instead of hospitals and schools.
And we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by and for the Iraqi people.
The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq.

The White House made the banner and supplied it to the Navy, that is correct...
Here is a line from that same speech:
"The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September 11, 2001, and still goes on."
A victory?
They haven't freed Afghanistan yet, I am not optimistic about Iraq.

Re: The troops answer Kerry...
Well someone convinced him apologizing might not be a bad idea, so he called Imus this morning and got the apology thing out there.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/15512797/
Imus had the best advice for him:
===
SEN. JOHN KERRY (D), MASSACHUSETTS: Good morning, Don Imus. How are you?
IMUS: Please stop it.
(LAUGHTER)
Stop talking. Go home, get on the bike, go windsurfing, anything. Stop it. You’re going to ruin this.
===
He would do well to listen, so you can hear in the backgorund:
SONNY (after entering the kitchen)
Why don't you cut out the crap. I got more important things for you to do.
(then)
How's Johnny?
CLEMENZA
Oh, Johnny? Won't see him no more...
At least not until after next Tuesday.

Accuracy aside, it might have been the stupidest thing any Democrat could've possibly said or done. No, it's the second stupidest. The stupidest is Kerry NOT APOLOGIZING for offending said troops.
Such an act could swing some voters who were wavering and thinking of going Democrat in this election; it will definitely motivate friends and family of the troops who might have not voted to step up and vote Democrat.
The longer this stays in the headlines, the more it'll hurt the Democrats at the polls. And while this is an extreme case, it's this kind of attitude that is the reason why the Democrats can't win many important elections anymore.
Indeed, the curent batch of Republicans win by calling Democrats baby killers, claiming that opponents father "colored" babies out of wedlock, claiming that the Democrats want to destroy marriage, claiming that decorated soldiers are traitors and POWs are crazy and by telling legal immigrants that they are not allowed to vote. People buy this stuff, it is sad. The Democrats need to dumb it down.
