Where are you? Yes, Niners' practice facility in Santa Clara.   2. How many fingers am I holding up? Yes, one. Which one? Right again.   3. What's the square root of 1369? No, it's 37. You should have gotten that one.   4. Who led the NL in batting average in 1915? No, it was Larry Doyle. You're seeming a little bit fuzzy to me.   5. What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? Alex?   Looks like Alex has been declared medically unfit to play this weekend. During that period, the team fired head coach Mike Nolan and replaced him with assistant head coach Mike Singletary. Singletary's first game resulted in a blowout loss at home against lowly Seattle(my prediction sure went well for them). During the game, J.T. O'Sullivan was benched for Shaun Hill and Hill has yet to give the job back as he has prodcued 10 TD, 4 INT, and a QB rating of 95 as 49ers starter. Singletary is 3-3 through his first 6 games as 49ers head coach. His wins have come against St. Louis, @Buffalo, and New York Jets. - Frank Gore is questionable for Sunday's game @ Miami with an ankle injury. Singletary continues to say that he will be a gametime decision.nondisclosed_email@example.com (sfgiantsfan1285)Thu, 11 Dec 2008 13:31:00 +0000 San Francisco 49ers Threadhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p482807,from=rss#post482807https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p482807,from=rss#post482807Just to update some things: - J.T. O'Sullivan was named the starting QB for the season opener at home against Arizona on September 7th. Alex Smith and Shaun Hill round out the QB depth chart. - 2007 4th round pick NT Joe Cohen was one of 5 cuts yesterday as the 49ers trimmed the roster to 76 players. O'Sullivan(DET), RB DeShaun Foster(CAR), LB Dontarrious Thomas(MIN) Key losses: DL Bryant Young, LG Larry Allen, ILB Derek Smith, WR Darrell Jackson, DE Marques Douglas, RT Kwame Harris, QB Trent Dilfer, RB Maurice Hicks Draft(in order): DL Kentwan Balmer(UNC), G Chilo Rachal(USC), DB Reggie Smith(OU), C Cody Wallace(Texas A&M), WR Josh Morgan(Va Tech), LB Larry Grant(Ohio St) Positives: Frank Gore bounced back from early injury issues to gain over 1100 yards on the ground. Solid inside runner that can explode into 2nd gear and also has improved a lot in the passing game as new OC Mike Martz looks to make him the focal point of the offense, both on the ground and coming out of the backfield. DeShaun Foster is a nice upgrade as the #2 back and gives the 49ers a speedy back with good size. Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson bring quality depth at WR to the 49ers. Bruce knows the system in and out and Johnson has the talent to step up in a starting role. Arnaz Battle is a good fit in the slot, along with talented youngsters in Jason Hill and Josh Morgan to fill out the depth chart. This is without question the best group of WR's in Nolan's tenure. Vernon Davis is a physical speciman that caught 50+ balls even though the 49ers got marginal play from 4 QB's. Delanie Walker is primed for a breakout year. He knows how to get seperation to make himself open and has improved as a blocker. David Baas and Joe Staley are the youngest starters on the OL and graded out as the 2 best linemen on the team last year. Staley is an elite athlete for his size and has the talent to be a very good LT. Baas is a road grader who showed a lot of promise. Mike Martz should prove to be an upgrade over Jim Hostler at OC. Hostler is seen around the league as someone with an OC future but many felt that he wasn't ready to take over and it showed. The defensive line got better as they added Justin Smith. Smith holds his own at the point of attack and has enough pass rushing quality to get to the QB. Isaac Sopoaga signed a contract extension and is making the move to LE. He's a strong bullrusher that is quick for his size. He has a lot of potential in this scheme. Manny Lawson returns from injury and showed improvement in coverage at OLB before injury. Patrick Willis is a beast and graded out as a top 3 ILB in the NFL last year. Nate Clements is an elite corner that shuts down one side of the field. Michael Lewis bounced back and had a solid season in this scheme. I thought it was questionable signing at the time but also thought he had good abilities for this scheme. Andy Lee was one of the best punters in the NFL last year and Joe Nedney is solid. Negatives: 3 way QB competitions are not a good way to get camp started, especially when all the QB's have major weaknesses. J.T. O'Sullivan has entered the picture and he's never been higher than #3 on a depth chart but being a Martz-type QB gives him a chance. Shaun Hill played well in 2 games last season but has a lot of question marks. Alex Smith is on the edge of being called a bust as he was rather ineffective pre-injury and post. Vernon Davis has yet to burst out and has done a lot more talking than being productive since coming into the NFL. He's a bad route runner that sometimes struggles catching the ball. Those 2 things are vital in a Martz offense. David Baas tore his pectoral muscle a few months ago and is said to be ready by season opener but there question marks surrounding the injury. Jonas Jennings has struggled to stay on the field. While the DL has positives, it has negatives as well. Sopoaga is moving to a new position and Justin Smith is in a new scheme. While I think they will be successful in this scheme, its going to take time. Tully Banta-Cain was a huge bust as the rush passing OLB last season. Manny Lawson is coming off a major injury and has not progressed enough as a pass rusher in the NFL. He needs to get a lot stronger but refuses to do so. These 2 really need to improve their pass rush or else the 49ers are going to be same as last year when it comes to pressuring the QB. There are question marks as to who will start next to Patrick Willis. While still effective, Walt Harris is getting up there in age and depth is not really all that strong. Mark Roman is a replacement level FS. I think they could use an upgrade there. Prediction: I'll go with 7-9 with a 6-10/8-8 potential. I think they are better than St. Louis and even with Arizona. Seattle should be atop this division rather easily. Nolan's job security will be a hot topic coming off a 4th straight losing season. nondisclosed_email@example.com (sfgiantsfan1285)Thu, 14 Aug 2008 14:47:37 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p467745,from=rss#post467745https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p467745,from=rss#post46774549ers draft: 1-29 DL Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina 2-39 OG Chilo Rachal, USC 3-75 DB Reggie Smith, Oklahoma 4-107 C Cody Wallace, Texas A&M 6-174 WR Josh Morgan, Virginia Tech 7-214 ILB Larry Grant, Ohio Statenondisclosed_email@example.com (sfgiantsfan1285)Wed, 30 Apr 2008 21:57:17 +0000 Re: San Francisco 49ers Threadhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p461706,from=rss#post461706https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p461706,from=rss#post461706The NFL released the Week 1 primetime schedule, so here it is: Thursday Sept 4 - Redskins @ Giants, 4 pm PT NBC Sunday Sept 7 - Bears @ Colts, 5:15 pm PT NBC Monday Sept 8 - Vikings @ Packers, 4 pm PT and Broncos @ Raiders, 7:15 pm PT on ESPNnondisclosed_email@example.com (Nine Buck)Tue, 01 Apr 2008 12:21:04 +0000 Re: San Francisco 49ers Threadhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p460454,from=rss#post460454https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p460454,from=rss#post460454Sit down Jon Kitna http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeaXlPfEAlM Nighty Night Jimmy Spencer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3FY8FnsAbA Who's This future 9er?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bM4sEmaFLQ nondisclosed_email@example.com (timmy4cyyoung)Wed, 26 Mar 2008 23:51:40 +0000 Re: San Francisco 49ers Threadhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p460437,from=rss#post460437https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p460437,from=rss#post460437Interesting that Justin Smiley signed with the dolphins less than 30 minutes aft Free Agency started.. Moving on to the 49ers free agent recap through the first week of free agency: - Re-signed QB Shaun Hill to 3 year, $6M with $2M guaranteed. Escalators push total deal to 3 years, $11.5M - Re-Signed Isaac Sopoaga to 5 year, $20M with $8M guaranteed - Contract Extension to RB Michael Robinson till 2012 - Signed DE Justin Smith to 6 year, $45M with $20M guaranteed - Signed RB DeShaun Foster to 2 year, $1.8M - Signed WR Isaac Bruce to 2 year, $6M - Signed QB J.T. O'Sullivan to 1 year deal - Signed ILB Dontarrious Thomas to 2 year deal - Signed RS Allen Rossum to 1 year, $800,000 - Lost G Justin Smiley to Dolphins, 5 years, $25M with $9M guaranteed - Lost OT Kwame Harris to Raiders, 3 years, $16M - Notable Free Agents available (SF) - G Larry Allen, DE Marques Douglas Grade: C+ Exception of Smith, nothing really flashy here. A lot of these signings improve the 49ers depth. Sopoaga is athletic enough for the move to End. He's a big, wide body that is nice to have in the 3-4 DL. Justin Smith, if he plays DE in the 3-4, is a good run defender that can hold his own at the POA. He could use his quickness from that spot to get a handful of sacks. If he moves to rush end OLB, he will need to drop weight to about 270-275. He is sure getting paid like he will stand up but this is issue worth watching over the next couple weeks if they happen to re-sign Douglas. Bruce will help the younger guys learn about the offense and he could likely produce enough to be the leading receiver for SF in 08. Thomas is a nice sleeper signing as he will move to a scheme that scouts think will suit him quite well. Expect him to take the RILB job. The OL depth took a big hit. nondisclosed_email@example.com (sfgiantsfan1285)Thu, 06 Mar 2008 16:40:55 +0000 https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p452523,from=rss#post452523https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p452523,from=rss#post452523I think Ryan is/will be a better QB than Brohm. However, his front office role will likely be reduced. Scot McCloughan will switch roles, from VP of Football Operations to GM. The 49ers will search for McCloughan's replacement. - Jim Hostler will likely be fired this week as the offensive coordinator. Bringing in Ted Tollner as an "offensive assistant" in the middle of the season made it certain imo. Expect them to keep Tollner around, either as a coordinator or QB coach, meaning QB coach Frank Cignetti could also get the axe. - Mike Singletary wants the job in Atlanta and he's supposedly leading the pack. A decent interview with them would make this a lock. Onto players: - Expect the team to announce that there will be a QB battle between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith during training camp. Hill is a free agent but early indications are that the team and Hill really want to get started on talks. - Jonas Jennings is not a lock to come back to SF. The team seems to want to move Staley to LT during the spring, barring picking up an elite LT via FA or draft. They could keep Jennings and move him to RT but its not clear whether Jennings would like that very much. The 49ers could look into an OT in FA, as Jennings' future is unclear and Kwame Harris will be gone. The 49ers like Snyder as a backup at both tackle spots. Larry Allen is mulling retirement, so expect an announcement soon on his future. If he does continue to play, he'd like to come back to the 49ers. Justin Smiley has lost his role on the lineup and is as good as gone, he likely won't accept backing up Allen and Baas. - Defensively, look for DL and OLB to be the main focus of the 49ers in the offseason. Franklin(NT) and Banta-Cain(OLB) were pretty much flops, so those 2 positions could be up in the air. The 49ers could address CB as well. They like Spencer as a nickel back but if they think an upgrade over Walt Harris is out there and within their price range, they could make that move. I've got nothing on the WR situation but it wouldn't shock me to see Jackson not being back. They'll likely continue to start Arnaz Battle, although his season wasn't as good as his previous 2. 2008 schedule is complete, dates and times released in March: Home: Rest of NFC West, Patriots, Jets, Eagles, Redskins and Lions. Away: Rest of NFC West, Bills, Dolphins, Cowboys, Giants and Saints. nondisclosed_email@example.com (sfgiantsfan1285)Sun, 30 Dec 2007 16:18:07 +0000 San Francisco 49ers Threadhttps://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p451618,from=rss#post451618https://boardsfgiantsfans.runboard.com/p451618,from=rss#post45161849ers finish 5-11 after losing 20-7 to Cleveland.
