What's wrong with a walk?

I know the key to pitching is throwing stuff with movement--especially downward movement. But don't these Giants swing at a lot of balls in the dirt, especially when the count is 3-2?

Why not take a 50-50 chance of the ump calling a ball, rather than make a wild swing with about a 20% chance of being a hit?
