Re: How did you become a Giants fan

My great-uncle was a Giants scout in Los Angeles. From as early as I can remember, we rooted for the Giants. (I can remember to about '71 or '72, but I know I was a Giants fan before then.) I hit as many games as I can in L.A. and San Diego and try to get up to F when I can. Saw them in Anaheim this year, too.

Re: My very first Professional Baseball Game

My first recollection of becoming a Giant's fan was seeing Willie Mays on TV. Believe it or not there were cartoons in which Willie made some guest appearances on. I want to say that he was on one of the ABC Saturday morning shows when I first saw him, anyways Willie Mays was my idle from that point forward, and thus I became a Giants fan.

My very first professional baseball game was in 1973. I went with a Church group from Sacramento to Candlestick Park to watch the Giants play the Mets. This was of course Willie Mays final season in baseball and he was a Met at the time. Candlestick had Astro Turf at the time, but the sight of a professional baseball field was life changing for me. I still remember some of the players who played for the Giants on that day. The names are as follows. Willie McCovey, Tito Fuentes, Chris Speier, Gary Mathews, Gary Maddox, Bobby Bonds, Dave Radar and Jim Barr.

One of the coolest things I remembered that day was watching Tito Fuentes flip his bat at home plate. He would throw it down handle head first and have it bounce back into his hands. As a kid I thought this was so cool and I even tried on my own with relative success for an 8yr old. Even though I liked the Giants going back to when I was only 4yrs old, the passion that comes with following a team was not cemented until my first game.

I weathered the horrible years like most of you did, especially in the early 80's until the Roger Craig era came to town. I became a season ticket holder in 86 up through most of 89 until I entered into the military. I was at the 87 playoff games against the Cardinals and fondly remember Jeffrey Leonards Flap Down home run trots as well as Todd Lindemans line drive shot into the right field bleachers which cost the Giants a win at home which ultimately cost the Giant's the playoff victory. I entered service on Sep 7th of 89 and had to watch the playoffs against the Cubs from a hospital bed because of pneumonia, but in all honesty, had I not gotten sick I would have never seen any of those games because we were not allowed to watch TV in basic training so the hospital stay was actually pretty awesome. I of course did not get to watch any of the games during the World Series against the A's and then of course the earthquake struck and other things became more important.

This is technically my 40th season as a die hard Giants fan, and like many of you probably did when they won it in 2010, I CRIED because I was so happy the years of futility were finally over. I watch every game these days on MLB.TV because I live in Texas. No matter though, I wear Giants gear all the time, and always represent. The Giants have a great following here in Central Texas and my job affords me great opportunities to see some of these fans on a daily basis. The only negative aspect of my living here now is that I cannot travel to Houston every season to see them play. Now I have to wait until the next inter league rotation for them to play here in Texas comes around and that won't be for awhile. My number one priority this season is getting out to AT&T to see a Giants game.

Sorry for the ramble but passion for something like mine is for the Giants warranted this rant. See all of you on the boards. Go Giants!

Re: How did you become a Giants Fan (and Who played a role)?

My father took me to my first game at Seals Stadium in 1958. Giants- Milwaukee Braves - Giants won 13-6. I was hooked. I fell asleep many nights listening to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons. And my father let me skip school to go to Game 2 of the '62 World Series - how could I not be a lifelong fan? Especially because I was supposed to stay after school that day in detention for talking in class...

Hey lollard,

LoneStar here, disguised as Chimpsdigthelongball. Good to see another MLB board poster on this site.

I'm going to try to breathe some life into this puppy, and any content you can share/add would be appreciated.

Be well!
