Lowry out till end of April

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/06/SP0RVEVE8.DTL

Giants starter Noah Lowry has been diagnosed with an unusual swelling of tissue in his pitching arm and will undergo what the Giants are terming a minor surgical procedure today. Lowry will miss the start of the regular season and, according to manager Bruce Bochy, possibly will return by late April.

Bochy said Lowry, who underwent a battery of tests in San Francisco this week, has been diagnosed with exertional compartment syndrome, in which swollen tissue can cause pressure in a limb, leading to pain and weakness. The surgery involves opening the compartment to relieve the pressure.

Bochy, speaking to reporters after getting a report from the team medical staff, said the surgeon will not cut into the muscle and that Lowry can resume throwing "in two, maybe three weeks."

"It's like when you're working out or lifting, there's more pressure supplied to the tissue," Bochy said. "That's why he had forearm tightness. That's why he's going to have this procedure, to give him more room in his arm, so it's not tight."

Lowry missed the final month of 2007 with the forearm tightness and this spring felt weakness in his left wrist. In his second spring training start Monday, Lowry walked nine batters in one inning.

"The thing we wanted to do is identify the problem," Bochy said. "It looks like we've done that. It's not great news, but it is good news because we know what the problem is."

With Lowry out, Kevin Correia is all but assured a spot in the Opening Day rotation, with Jonathan Sanchez and Pat Misch the main candidates for the fifth spot.

It's kinda strange how the injury went from his wrist to his arm overnight. I think this might be more serious than we are led to believe. Let's hope he can get back ASAP. We need him... He's not only once of our best pitchers, but probably one of our top hitters as well

LOL

I was thinking the same thing about the Giants pitchers -- I would get in a lot of work in the batting cage if I was a starter b/c unless they drive in the runs themselves they may never score.

If there's one thing we've learned, one thing we can no longer deny... it's that Noah Lowry cannot be depended on for a full season. Yes, 2005 he pitched about 200 innings. But these weird injuries keep happening to him, and will continue to do so. Does anyone really think he's going to put it all together and not get hurt again? Just not durable enough. I don't mean to be fatalistic, but we should have unloaded him when we had the chance.

So what you're saying is that Noah Lowry is the pitching equivalent of Rocco Baldelli.

(Looks around for SHK)

Had to be said.

Lowry's surgery went well, other than the thing about operating on the wrong arm.
However, they also did some preventative maintenance and caught a few other trouble spots that were looming on the horizon.
